  梅丽莎还有其他重要的研究工作,我现在简要讨论一下。梅丽莎与本杰明·琼斯(Benjamin Jones)和本杰明·奥尔肯合著了两篇论文(表1第九篇和第十篇论文),研究气候对长期经济发展的影响,他们要回答的问题是气候(以及隐含的气候变化)是否以及如何影响经济结果。

  在《温度冲击与经济增长:过去半个世纪的证据》(表1第十篇论文)中,作者利用一国的气候和温度波动研究温度对收入水平和经济增长的影响。该论文发现了具有统计意义的实质性负面影响。鉴于总体跨国数据的性质,作者只能有限地揭示这一令人惊讶的重要效应的根本原因。但是,他们表明温度影响各个行业,甚至可能影响政治动荡。第二篇论文则是派生的,旨在进一步探讨相同的问题。

  梅丽莎也为高质量的实证研究工作做出了贡献。在《我们从天气中学到了什么?新经济气候文献》(表1第十一篇论文)中,梅丽莎等人清晰地阐明了使用微观数据进行跨空间天气变化研究的最佳实践。该论文展示了这种变化如何有助于回答各种问题,但也指出了各种陷阱。例如,温度和降雨数据通常是由卫星数据或少数气象站数据内推或外推而来,可能存在空间上的相关性或者推断错误。

  在表1中列举的第十二篇和第十三篇论文中,梅丽莎和她的合著者开发了新的计算图像处理方法,用于从非标准(和外语)文本数据中提取信息,随着对档案记录的数字化日益普及,这种方法已变得越来越普遍。

结论

  梅丽莎为应用研究设定了新的标准,因为她以自己为例,表明我们不必回避长期经济发展和政治经济学的根本问题(也是社会科学的一些根本问题),也能做出可信甚至创新性的实证研究。学术研究和出版环境对可靠的识别策略的要求不一定将研究人员局限在狭窄的研究背景和问题上。梅丽莎突破性的方法展示了如何进行艰苦而细致的数据收集,以及使用精巧且可落地的实证方法,从而使经济学家和其他社会科学家理解制度的运作方式。她的工作植根于特定制度的历史、背景和细节。在宽泛的研究议题中,她形成了数条独特的研究路线。

  正如本文所述,梅丽莎的洞察力、活力和创造力都无与伦比。但是,在我们这些认识她的人看来,同样令人印象深刻的是她崇高的职业精神和勇攀学术高峰的决心。我清楚地记得,每次我们乘坐同一航班去开会时,我都会看到她全神贯注地阅读一本历史书,哪怕在排队登机或下飞机时也不例外。这种职业精神不仅让她成为了不起的学者,还让她成为一名优秀的长跑运动员(这样的训练对那些致力于改变自己所在领域的人来说是合适的,这一任务与马拉松无异)。

  我们都赞赏梅丽莎的工作,但她已取得的研究成就的真正受益者是经济发展和政治经济学领域的下一代年轻学者。他们可以从梅丽莎的职业精神、对历史和实证工作的精妙方法以及解决重大问题的雄心和勇气中学到很多。实际上,梅丽莎已经让雄心勃勃的应用经济学家们发现,长期经济增长的根本问题是值得研究的。
